Round Rock Texas - Bordering on North Austin, Round Rock is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. Not only is Round Rock a well planned, and growing metro, but it is also one of the best places in the country to purchase a house. The area continues to enjoy massive job growth and has very affordable and stable home prices. Round Rock is and on the move making it one of the best places in the country to live!  In 1851 Round Rock's downtown was originally located (about a mile away) along a stage coach route and was called "Brushy Creek" by the first postmaster. However, the name was changed in 1854 in honor of the round rock that marked the low water crossing used by cattle, wagons and horses.  The original settlement was along a road (now called Chisholm Trail) which was a feeder route to the actual Chisholm Trail. Chisholm Trail was named in honor of Jesse Chisholm (trader, interpreter, guide, trading post owner and businessman) who hauled freight along the trail.  Cattleman began to move small herds of cattle from south Texas, through Round Rock, to the railhead in Abilene Kansas after the great civil war. From 1867 to 1888 the Chisholm Trail was heavily used due to significantly higher cattle values outside of Texas ($4 a head in Texas versus $40 a head in the North and East). In 1876 the International and Great Northern Railroad extended their rail end to 1 mile east of Round Rock. This invigorated the local economy and in 1877, Round Rock was relocated alongside the new railroad end. At the time Round Rock's six hotels surpassed Austin's five and local merchants boasted of their ability to undercut Austin prices by securing goods faster and with less freight charges. For a short time, (until 1879 when the railroad extended their lines into Austin) Round Rock was the trade center for ten central Texas counties.   Round Rock Water Tower

Two mainstays of downtown Round Rock are the Main Street Grill  (this location was once Farmer State Bank est. 1920) and Round Rock Donuts (A.K.A. Lone Star Bakery est. 1926). The building to the left in this picture was the home to the Round Rock Broom factory during the prosperous railroad era (1887? -1912).  Round Rock Donuts in Round Rock Texas

The two story home was built circa 1870. Historically, this was near the ford of Brushy Creek used as a feeder route to the Chisholm Trail and was later a pioneer road from Austin to Georgetown.
This road is now called Chisholm Trail.
