About Georgetown:  Established in 1848, at the fork of the North and South San Gabriel river, as an agricultural trading center for greater area. Much of Georgetown's historical homes, businesses, and historical establishments have been carefully preserved! The downtown square area is exciting, vibrant and a great tourist attraction. A farmers market is held on the square every Thursday!

Williamson County was called "The Land of Good Water" by the Tonkawa Indians.  Early pioneers were attracted to the Georgetown area because of the abundant and pure water supply that issued from the ground springs. Additionally, the land to the east was fertile, inexpensive and there were plenty of timber, alongside the river beds, for home building. Cotton was the major crop of the area from 1880 through 1920 and created wealth for several generations. Current population is approximately 50,000. Fortune Small Business Magazine in a 2008 publication named Georgetown the No. 2 best city in the nation to live and launch.

Grain Silos - Reminders of Georgetowns (Texas) agrarian past.
Grain Silos
Grain Silos (no longer used) are reminders of Georgetown's past agricultural booms. The soils to the east of Georgetown were so fertile that farmers became very prosperous in just a few years. Most of the farms in 1850 -1870, were small and grew staple crops like corn and wheat. From 1870 -1910 the area had rapid economic and population increases brought about by the cattle industry first, followed the railroad industry and finally by the cotton industry.

In 1892 picket fences surrounded almost every home in Georgetown creating a unique and classic hometown mystique. The cattle and railroad and cotton industries ushered in relative prosperity that is reflected in the abundance of Victorian style homes preserved throughout Georgetown from this era. In 1997 Georgetown was honored as a "Great American Main Street City".
